Artist Statement
I have willingly sacrificed
my senses to technology.
It is by a force-of-will
that an individual becomes absorbed in the illusion of cyberspace. The illusion
is obvious but we are still fascinated. It is this narcissistic, self-seduction
directly contrasted with the basic human need for sensory stimulation that
directs my current works. I choose to use digital video and digital photography
specifically because of their lack of physicality, the pliability of the
imagery the potential for illusion.
By projecting moving imagery
back onto the stationary material that was used to shoot the video I am
referencing the diffraction of time, space and physical form that are constant
aspects of cyberspace. Also, the curiously human drive to enhance, store and
preserve reality even beyond the constraints of a human life-span.
The digital portraits are
part of a series that directly references the absence of the physical senses in
technologically mediated communication. The eyes, mouth, nose or ears are
removed. In the photo ŇlifelessÓ I have made a more subtle removal of the major
lines of the hand: life, head, heart and fate lines have been erased
representing the non-existence of life, cognition, emotion and destiny within
the digital realm. All that remains are the fingerprints as identifying marks
of the individual; a play on the myth of the index in digital capture. These
are all presented on a monitor, as it is the natural home for these purely
digital creations.
When choosing materials for
my work, I find myself attracted to the smooth, sensual, cool and shiny with a
subtle color palate and graceful lines. I am seduced by reflections, shadows
and illusions. Admittedly, my continued study of technology and intangibility
has sparked a healthy nostalgia for un-mediated sensory experience and social
interaction but I canŐt help but be fascinated by the sensual manipulations of
technology.
In a world full of
intangibility we willingly suspend disbelief and embrace fascination.
Because, truthfully, who
doesnŐt love a good game of seduction and illusion?
